Georgia women’s tennis finishes play at ITA Southeast Regional Championships Championships

The Georgia women’s tennis team concluded action at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships on Thursday, but sophomore Anastasiia Lopata advanced to the singles semifinals.

After a dominating second day and opening of singles main draw, the Bulldogs had much to prove advancing into the singles and doubles round of 16.

To begin doubles play, the No. 1 seeded junior pair of Mai Nirundorn and Guillermina Grant were defeated in a dominating 8-1 performance from Ellie Schoppe and Maelie Monfils from Florida State.

In the round of 16, freshman Aysegul Mert and Lopata had a close match against Amy Kaplan and Annabelle David from the University of North Florida. The Bulldog duo came out on top in a hard fought 8-7(6) victory.

Mert and Lopata fell short in the doubles quarterfinals, which took place only hours after the round of 16. Against opponents Victoria Gomez O’Hayon and Millie-Mae Matthews from Florida Atlantic University, Mert and Lopata could not pull off a victory, and were defeated 8-7(5).

These losses effectively eliminated both doubles pairs from the tournament.

In singles play, Mert faced No. 4 seed Carly Briggs from the University of Florida, where she was defeated in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.

Lopata faced Ekaterina Khayrutdinova from Florida International University in the round of 16 in three sets. Lopata had a successful first set, besting her opponent 6-1. In the second set, Khayrutdinova fought back for a 6-2 win. The third set came down to a tie-breaker, where Lopata was victorious in a 7-6(3) win.

Grant then won by default in a walkover against No. 2 seed Sara Dalhstrom from the University of Florida. In the quarterfinals, Lopata and Grant were set to compete against each other.

In the battle between Lopata and Grant, Lopata came out on top in the quarterfinals in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, which effectively eliminated Grant from the tournament while Lopata advanced to the semifinals.

No. 7 seed Lopata faced No. 12 seed Rachel Gailis from Florida, who had defeated No. 3 seed Kylie Bilchev from Georgia Tech in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-4. Gailis had another strong performance in the semifinals against Lopata, defeating her in straight sets. In the first set, Gailis started strong in a 6-3 win.
