The No. 3 Georgia women’s tennis team faced off against No. 5 Michigan on Saturday.
The match was held at the Michigan Invitational where all the matches were individual with no team scoring kept before the regular spring season kicked off.
There were six individual matches held, with the Bulldogs winning a pair of them.
No. 70 sophomore Anastasiia Lopata picked up a win over the Wolverines’ Jaeden Brown in straight sets 6-4, 6-0.
No. 116 junior Mell Reasco saw similar results for Georgia against No. 39 Julia Flaegner, winning 6-4, 6-0 in a dominant fashion
“In these multi-day events, we talk a lot about backing up our work day after day and Mell did exactly that today,” head coach Drake Bernstein said.
Michigan, however, took the other four matches. No. 10 Kari Miller defeated Georgia’s No. 30 junior, Dasha Vidmanova, 6-4, 6-4 in a hard-fought battle.
No. 47 Lily Jones picked up a win for the Wolverines, coming back from down 6-1 to take the next two sets 6-0, 10-8 — with the last set in the invitational being a first-to-10 tiebreaker — against No. 116 junior Mai Nirundorn.
Piper Charney and Reese Miller rounded things out for Michigan, as they defeated both freshman Aysegul Mert and junior Guillermina Grant respectively. Charney got the victory 6-2, 3-6, 10-0 and Miller won in straight sets 7-5, 7-5.
“Today was another step forward for our team,” Bernstein said. “We are getting better at playing together with each day that goes on.”
The Bulldogs will round out the Michigan Invitational playing No. 20 Georgia Tech in singles and Michigan in doubles on Sunday, Jan. 14.
