Georgia women’s tennis concluded three days of competition at the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor, Michigan with a full day of doubles play. The Bulldogs took four doubles wins between competitions with Ohio State and Michigan to close out the weekend.
The Bulldogs dominated in play against the Wolverines in their afternoon matches, taking three of four matches.
The No. 58 pair of Aysegul Mert and Dasha Vidmanova started the match strongly and kept their momentum going, leading them to an eventual 6-1 upset over Michigan’s No. 8 duo of Kari Miller and Jaedan Brown. Mert and Vidmanova added the win to their previous successful singles and doubles matches earlier in the weekend.
The winning streak continued as the No. 15 pair of Guillermina Grant and Mai Nirundorn took a steady 6-1 win over Michigan’s Julia Fliegner and Lily Jones, which brought the Bulldogs to a 2-0 lead. This was the duo’s second doubles win of the invitational, after earning a doubles victory over Georgia Tech on Friday.
Anastasiia Lopata and Haley Gaudette clinched the win for Georgia, despite a tough battle with the Wolverine’s pair of Gala Mesochoritou and Bayley Sheinin. The Bulldog tandem went back and forth with the Wolverines, leaving them tied 5-5 before winning two straight games to clinch the match 7-5.
Georgia, contrarily to Michigan, struggled in competition with Ohio State, as they took just one of four matches in the morning.
The one win of the morning came from the new, but mighty, pair of Alexandra Vecic and Mell Reasco, who dominated against the Ohio State duo of Sydni Ratliff and Shelley Bereznyak, 6-3. Reasco added the victory to her successful performances in the first two days of competition, including a ranked singles win in Saturday’s play.
The No. 15 tandem of Nirundorn and Grant and the pair of Gaudette and Lopata fought hard in their matches but came up short, losing 7-5 to Ohio State in their respective matches.
Georgia will have its first dual match of the season in an away series to face No. 1 North Carolina on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. This is the first time the two teams will meet since UNC defeated Georgia in the semifinals of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
