THOMASVILLE – Children may not be in school for the next two months, but that does not mean they will be without a food source until next school year.
The Thomasville YMCA is assisting in providing breakfast and lunch for school-aged children in Thomas County, through Happy Helpings – Georgia’s Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided at more than 30 locations to children age 18 and younger at no charge.
Cindy Quigg, human resources director of the Thomasville YMCA, talked about the importance of children in her community having access to food during the summer.
“In a lot of cases, this is the only meal some of these kids get. During the school year the kids rely on school lunches, but during the summer, they don’t have school lunches to rely on. We go into the neighborhoods so that the kids will be able to get a meal,” Quigg said.
“We have 34 locations. We also go into Pavo, Barwick, Ochlocknee, Boston, Coolidge; it’s a great program. We’ve been doing it since the ’90s, I think. We’ve been doing it for quite a while. It’s a great program every year. The kids depend on it.”
