This year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is in full swing, and Sony has delivered an impressive lineup of announcements and reveals. Among them is an Immersive Entertainment Concept trailer centered around an adaptation of the popular video game and television series The Last of Us.
The trailer, which you can check out below, showcases Sony’s innovative approach to expanding their in-house narratives into new, immersive mediums. The proof-of-concept project leverages cutting-edge location-based technologies, including Sony’s crystal LED panels, immersive audio, haptics, scent, and atmospheric effects, to fully transport audiences into the heart of these stories.
Now, you’re probably asking—what does this have to do with Ghostbusters? While The Last of Us takes center stage in the presentation, two other significant Sony properties also get the spotlight: Horizon Zero Dawn and, you guessed it, Ghostbusters!
The Ghostbusters footage features a flyover of a fabricated New York City. The iconic Hook & Ladder 8 Firehouse is shown, accompanied by a gaggle of ghouls, including Slimer, Muncher, and, replacing the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, a towering, not-so-Mini-Puft. Again, while The Last of Us is the clear focus, it should go without saying that being amongst Sony’s most successful and easily recognizable IPs, it wouldn’t be surprising to learn of further development combining Ghostbusters with Sony’s location-based entertainment technology.
If this all sounds familiar, there’s good reason. At last year’s CES, the same Ghostbusters footage was featured in Sony’s presentation, accompanied by an immersive on-site experience where attendees came face-to-face with that oversized Mini-Puft.
Of course, Ghostbusters isn’t new to location-based attractions. Previous ventures like HOLOGATE’s Ghostbusters VR Academy and The Void’s Ghostbusters Dimension have let fans strap on unlicensed nuclear accelerators while pushing boundaries with cutting-edge VR technology and unique sensory effects, like the unmistakable scent of charred marshmallows.
Sony’s CES presentation may have already aired earlier this week, but if any additional Ghostbusters surprises emerge during the event, we’ll be sure to update you. Also, thanks to Ghostbusters News reader @Stingray_travel for providing the heads-up on today’s headline.
