“You have 10 people living in your house; a box of food is not going to last you two weeks,” Karras said.

During the peak of COVID-19, Second Harvest Food Bank approved Serenity’s Grace as an official pantry.

With Second Harvest, they began receiving more food than they thought they needed.

Lisa Jero is now behind the scenes working for the pantry, but at one point, she used to be a client.

“I wasn’t making it day by day, ’cause I’m disabled, I get my check on the third, by the fifth I’m broke. Had no clue how I was going to survive, had no clue what I was going to do,” Jero said.

She reached out to Karras at Serenity’s Grace and said she doesn’t know what she would have done without them.

“I don’t think they realize how many people they help,” Jero said.

Food insecurity is a big issue in this community. Some neighbors say they can’t pay their bills because they’d rather eat, and others have to buy medicine, so they have no way of paying for food.

“I don’t think living in America anybody should be hungry,” Karras said.
