OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – New life is coming to a building on the corner of 24th and Q Streets in south Omaha. It’s sat vacant for some time.
Marta Sonia and Gloria Avalos are behind the South Omaha Global Market. It’s a development that’s been in the works since 2017. The idea is to turn the empty space into a hub for businesses and a place for people to gather.
“We will build a market that is a food court with around 16 businesses that will be from different parts of the world,” Sonia said. “We will have a parking lot next door that will be covered and another will be open. We will also have a place for food trucks and an open space for events and we will also be adding a second floor with a commercial kitchen with different spaces.”
Construction will happen in phases; the first is planned to start next year and includes the food market and parking lot. Work on the second floor is slated to begin in 2026.
“We will show diversity and that it’s important to work, to respect, and learn about other cultures and the necessity of integration,” Sonia said.
“24th Street is a place for everyone to visit,” Avalos said. “A lot of people including Americans like to come eat here, and it’s a good opportunity to show our culture and food.”
The market has an estimated price tag of $60 million and will provide about 50 jobs. Construction is set to be finished by 2027.
