GM recalls entire Cruise autonomous vehicle unit after car dragged pedestrian 20 feet

DETROIT — General Motors announced Wednesday it is recalling all 950 vehicles that are part of the company’s Cruise autonomous vehicle unit after an incident involving a pedestrian last month. According to the Associated Press, the recall is necessary so that a software update can be installed that will cause Cruise vehicles to remain stationary after a crash.

The recall stems from an Oct. 2 crash in San Francisco involving a Cruise, another vehicle and a pedestrian. A pedestrian was hit by a car — driven by an actual person — and was sent into the path of the autonomous Cruise which did not have a person in the vehicle. The Cruise initially stopped, but the pedestrian still hit the autonomous car.

However, when the Cruise decided to pull over to the side of the road after the crash to clear the roadway, the pedestrian was pulled forward by approximately 20 feet and then pinned underneath the Cruise. The victim suffered critical injuries in the ordeal.

Following the crash, the California Department of Motor Vehicles revoked the license for Cruise to operate in the state. The Cruise fleet transports people throughout San Francisco without human drivers. Cruise also suspended operations nationwide following the crash.

GM says that although its own testing determined that a similar accident would only happen every 10 million to 100 million miles, the company went ahead with the recall anyway.

“We strive to continually improve and to make these events even rarer,” reads a statement from GM. “As our software continues to improve, it is likely we will file additional recalls to inform both NHTSA and the public of updates to enhance safety across our fleet.”

Cruise has already installed the software update in the test vehicles and the actual fleet will be updated before operations resume.
