God’s Storehouse needs more volunteers to keep up with increased food demand

An organization in Danville that’s dedicated to helping others, needs some help of their own.

God’s Storehouse says because the demand for food has increased in the community, they need more volunteers to help keep up with it.

In 2023, God’s Storehouse distributed 29,988 boxes of food. That’s 30 percent more than they did in 2022.

They say that the jump is due to the increase in food prices, and the assistance that people were getting during the pandemic has stopped.

“I think that’s attributed to the high cost of food you’re seeing in the grocery stores, that your dollar doesn’t stretch as far as it used to,” said God’s Storehouse Executive Director, Karen Harris.

They’re looking for more volunteers who can help distribute, pack, and transport food. Harris says having more volunteers will help the process move faster and more efficiently.

“The people that we serve have to stand in a line a lot for everything. So, my goal is to get them in here and out of here as quickly as possible. So, that’s one less line they have to stand in. In order for us to do that, we’ve got to have a lot of people,” Harris said.

Harris says that no amount of help is too small, and any free time folks are willing to volunteer is welcome.

“We’re so grateful for the time that people give us. Even if it’s just an hour or two hours. They don’t have to commit for the whole four hours. That would still help us a great deal,” Harris said.

God’s Storehouse does food distributions on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 am to 2:30 pm and on Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
