GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — Two Garfield Township neighbors using a car sharing service had their cars stolen and driven miles away downstate.
Turo is a peer-to-peer car sharing company that allows car owners to rent out their vehicles. It operates on a business model like AirBnB.
According to Lieutenant Jon Morgan with the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office, the cars were dropped off at different locations for the renters to use. An Audi was left at a fire station in Garfield Township and a Jeep was left at a church.
Lt. Morgan said the neighbors told deputies they rented out their cars through Turo dozens of times and never had issues with the cars being returned.
The Jeep was rented on October 12th and meant to be returned on the 15th. The renter requested an extension for the Jeep through the Turo app and had a new return date on the 17th.
The Audi was rented on October 9th and meant to be returned the 17th. The renter also asked the owner for an extension for the Audi, but never formally made the request through the Turo app.
Neither the Audi nor the Jeep were returned on the 17th. The owners of the cars reported them stolen.
Lt. Morgan said both cars had tracking devices to locate them. The Audi was found in Gladwin County and the Jeep was found in Genesee County. The suspects found driving the cars were both arrested for stolen property.
Lt. Morgan said both cars had no damage, and the investigation is ongoing.
