Grant Gustin and Candice Patton Speak Up About Leaving ‘The Flash’

Grant Gustin and Candice Patton, who play Barry Allen and Iris West on The Flash, recently discussed why they left the show after season 9.

Gustin told Entertainment Weekly in an interview that he had thought about going earlier but was persuaded to stay a little longer.

The show was supposed to run for six years but extended to seven. After getting married in season 5 and having a child in season 7, Gustin thought about stopping the show after season 8. But after talking with the show’s executive producer, Greg Berlanti, he chose to stay on for season 9.

Gustin said that when he decided to leave the show after season 9, he didn’t know if it would keep going without him as the main character.

He said that if the show had gone on for a 10th season while he went on to other projects, it would have made him question his choice. He was relieved when it was decided that the last season would have 13 shows and be the end of the show.

Patton plays Iris West-Allen, and she said that she had been thinking about leaving the show for a while. She talked to other players who had left the show, like Carlos Valdes, Tom Cavanagh, and Jesse L. Martin, to learn more about what they went through. In the end, she decided to leave after season 9, even though she didn’t know that would be the last season.

When she talked about it, Patton stressed how her time on “The Flash” changed her life. She talked about the things she had to give up when she moved away from home for nine years and lost her sense of routine. At the end of the show, she thanked the team and talked about the good times they had together.

Valdes left the show after the seventh season. He said that he wanted to put his mental health first and look for other options. Even though he felt he owed something to the people and the show, he had to follow his inner compass and make the best choice for himself.

Cavanagh stopped being a regular on the show after season 6, but he came back for more seasons, including the last one. He said he was glad he could leave and come back whenever he wanted. He agreed that it was important not to stay too long and that playing a criminal like the Reverse-Flash was fun. He thought he was lucky to be asked back for more than one season and thought it was the best thing that could happen.

As the stars of The Flash said goodbye to the show, they talked about how it made them feel and how important it was to them.
