“We’re currently in the midst of broadening our appeal,” the casino’s marketing chief said.
Since it opened in 2013, the Graton Resort and Casino in Rohnert Park has presented a string of big-name acts: comedians Kevin Hart and Jo Koy, musicians Boyz II Men, Willie Nelson and Grand Funk Railroad, and more.
And you can expect the pace to pick up.
Acts announced for this summer and fall include comedians and former talk show hosts Jay Leno and Arsenio Hall and musicians Peter Frampton, War and Kansas.
Leno, longtime host of “The Tonight Show,” has been onstage in the region before. He performed in 2019 at the Rodney Strong Vineyards in Healdsburg and hosted the annual Auction Napa Valley wine event in 2005.
Hall, best known for hosting his late-night talk show “The Arsenio Hall Show” in the 1990s, also co-starred with Eddie Murphy in the film “Coming to America” in 1988 and its sequel “Coming 2 America” in 2021.
Comedy acts do well at the casino.
“Chris Tucker sold out in April this year,” said Jeremy Weinstein, who joined the Graton casino last year as chief marketing officer.
But the musicians do just as well.
Frampton rose to prominence as a member of the rock bands The Herd and Humble Pie and later found significant success as a solo artist. It’s proof of his staying power that his show is already sold out.
War, an R&B band known for “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” and other hits, has played at the Graton casino before, but rock band Kansas, whose hits include “Carry On Wayward Son” and “Dust in the Wind,” will be appearing at the casino for the first time.
“We have a few classic rock acts,” Weinstein said. “In August, we’ll have Vanilla Ice with four supporting acts.”
The entertainment will have an international flavor as well.
“We’re currently in the midst of broadening our appeal to all of the demographics that are prominent in the Bay Area,” Weinstein said.
So, you can expect to see Malaysian-Chinese singer Eric Moo, as well as Malaysian-born Hong Kong actress and singer Mimi Chu, who’ll team up with Cantonese pop star Johnny Yip.
“We brought Johnny Yip out of retirement to do this one show for us,” Weinstein explained. “We had him last year and people loved him.”
The casino also will present Hong Kong-American actor and stand-up comedian Jimmy O. Yang, best known for the HBO comedy series “Silicon Valley,” who also co-starred in the Netflix series “Space Force” opposite Steve Carell.
“The surprise act we have is Jimmy O. Yang,” Weinstein said. “Everybody wants to see him.”
The casino aims to reach a broad range of audiences.
“We’re also playing up the Latin acts a bit more,” Weinstein said.
The latest show list includes Mexican singer Pancho Barraza, who is fluent in several Latin music genres, including rancheras, mariachi and norteno, and Colombian singer Manuel Turizo, who rose to stardom with his 2017 debut chart-topping single, “Una Lady Como Tú.”
“In the future, we want to focus on international acts that haven’t been in the U.S.,” Weinstein added.
The casino plans to open a 3,500-seat hall on its campus in 2027, so this is only the beginning.
“This is a ramping-up period,” Weinstein said.
