Residents can now shop locally at Sentry Foods on Spring Drive

Milwaukee residents on the northwest side finally have access to a grocery store after living in an area identified as a fresh food desert. Sentry Foods opened Friday morning at 6350 W. Silver Spring Drive with the intent of making shopping more accessible for locals. Prior to Sentry Foods, locals did not have a nearby grocery store since 2019, when the Kohl’s Food Store closed. “I could actually walk four blocks over, so, no problem. If it’s warm enough, I can walk, bring a wagon and shop, do all my grocery shopping right here,” Sheila Hunt, a local who’s lived in the area for about 30 years, said. “Now we been waiting for this since we saw the sign.”Hunt said grocery stores in the area have been opening and closing for years, causing her and her family to go to different grocery stores much farther away. “Fresh, nutritious foods are not always easy to come by in certain areas, and I am very pleased to add Sentry and its bountiful offerings to the district. I’m sure residents will take advantage of its large inventory and shop there often,” Alderwoman Larresa Taylor said. The store will service those living in the neighborhoods of Westlawn Gardens, Silver Spring, and Havenwoods.
