Halloween performer faces biggest nightmare after car accident


Halloween events will be well underway this weekend, but for one performer who plays different spooky characters at local festivals, the holiday will never be the same.It is safe to say that Halloween is Carlos Filomeno’s favorite holiday, as he performs in elaborate costumes at Halloween events.”This is what I’ve always done. I’ve always performed, and I’ve always enjoyed being a part of those big events,” Filomeno said.But scarier than those events is the thought of being unable to participate in them.Filomeno was in a severe car accident in August that had him thinking life as he knew it was over.”I was just sitting there, taking a deep breath in. I really was like, honestly, this just might be it because there’s just so much blood coming out of me,” Filmero said.The force sent his arm straight through the windshield, but by grace, Vicky and Jeff Roland, who both work at HCA Florida Osceola Hospital, were nearby.”We were five cars behind the accident,” Vicky Roland said. “I had seen him with his arm out the windshield on the driver’s side. I said, ‘This is ugly. We have to stop.’”Vicky Roland said she took his jacket and wrapped it around his wound to stop the bleeding. “Just wanted to wrap his jacket around his wound, and by that point, an off-duty Osceola sheriff was a couple cars behind us and saw what was happening,” Vicky Roland said.The deputy at the scene had a tourniquet and was able to get the bleeding under control. He was then transported to the ER in an ambulance. Filomeno is still recovering but credits Vicky’s quick response for making it possible for him to return to his passion just in time for his favorite holiday.”There’s no denying that she played a big part to me being able to sit here today, being able to enjoy Halloween, to keep performing, keep working, keep moving forward,” Filomeno said.Vicky Roland said she was just grateful to be at the right place at the right time.”I’m just glad we were at the right place at the right time, and I’m just grateful he’s doing as well as he’s doing and being able to come back.
