Sir Michael Gambon has died. He was the actor who played Professor Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight Harry Potter movies. Gambon died “peacefully in hospital” with his family by his side after getting pneumonia, his wife, Lady Gambon, and son, Fergus Gambon, said in a statement. 82 years old.
“Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82. We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love,” according to The Guardian.
Gambon started playing more than 60 years ago. He was born in Dublin and was later called “The Great Gambon” by Ralph Richardson. After dropping out of school at 15, the actor worked as a set builder for a while before getting roles at London’s Unity and Tower theaters. In 1962, he made his acting debut in a performance of Othello in Dublin. In 1965, he made his film debut in Othello. At age 22, he made his West End debut as an understudy in The Bed-Sitting Room. He went on to become, along with Laurence Olivier, one of the original members of the Royal National Theatre. Later in his career, he won Oliviers, BAFTAs, and Emmys.
In his six-decade-long career, Gambon is probably best known for his work in the Harry Potter movies. The actor joined the series, which is based on J.K. Rowling’s best-selling books, in the third movie, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). He replaced Richard Harris as Professor Albus Dumbledore, who had played the role in the first two movies but died in 2002. Gambon told the U.K.’s the Independent, according to Variety, that he hadn’t seen any of the previous movies but that working on the series was “huge fun” and made him a lot of money. He then went on to appear in the last five Harry Potter movies: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows –
Gambon has been in more than 140 TV shows or movies over the course of his work. He is best known for playing French detective Jules Maigret in the ITV show Maigret. He is also well-known for playing Philip Marlow in the BBC show The Singing Detective, which was written by Dennis Potter. Among the other movies he has worked on are Gosford Park, Luck, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover, The Lost Prince, The King’s Speech, and Path to War. In the Elder Scrolls video games, he also did the character of The Prophet. He won three Laurence Olivier Awards, four U.K. television BAFTAs, and was made a knight in 1998 for his work in the entertainment business.
Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid, died in October 2022, and Leslie Phillips, who was the voice of the Sorting Hat in the Harry Potter movies, died in November 2022.
