Is The Handmaid’s Tale Season 7 renewed or canceled by Hulu?

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 7 is not happening.

Hulu confirmed that Season 6 is the final season of the series. The creative team chose to end the show rather than face cancellation. Creator Bruce Miller originally pitched a five-season arc and later expanded it to six.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, co-showrunner Yahlin Chang explained, “We were doing a little retreat before the beginning of the season five writers room… Bruce was like, ‘I think we have two more seasons.’” The sixth season continues to explore the rebellion against Gilead, ending June Osborne’s arc after a multi-year journey from handmaid to resistance leader.

Hulu opted not to produce a seventh season and instead began developing a follow-up series titled The Testaments. The spin-off, based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel, takes place about 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale. Bruce Miller left his role on Handmaid in 2023 to focus on The Testaments, which began filming in April 2025.

The Testaments will feature returning cast members such as Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia and introduce new characters including Agnes (Chase Infiniti), Daisy (Lucy Halliday), and Becka (Mattea Conforti). The story follows a younger generation of women in Gilead as they grapple with their reality and seek freedom.

According to Hulu, The Testaments is “a coming-of-age story” set in Gilead, and will offer a “completely different feel and vibe” while continuing key themes. Elisabeth Moss, who portrayed June, will serve as an executive producer.

A release window has not been confirmed, but a 2026 premiere is likely.
