‘Healing Together’: Mental health help offered on-site, online following Lewiston mass shooting

LEWISTON (WGME) — The Maine Department of Health and Human Services is launching online tools to help everyone affected by last week’s shooting grieve and recover mentally.

In a press conference Monday, Gov. Janet Mills addressed her administration’s work towards making sure there is a thorough investigation. The governor also talked about the healing process.

“I want to acknowledge that many of us have been feeling a range of emotions: from shock to sadness; from anxiety to fear; from grief to anger. I have felt many of these emotions myself over the past several days, and I am sure we will all feel these things in the coming days,” Gov. Mills said.

The DHHS is now offering help on how to handle the healing process.

On this page, the department offers advice for all affected. Leaders preach even if you did not know someone directly involved, everyone is directly affected.

One focus is on how to help children, stating younger elementary school students should be given the simple information, but as kids get older, they raise more questions and form stronger opinions. Experts say teachers should explain the role these students have in “maintaining safe communities.”
