Health experts say ‘falling back’ from daylight savings can improve sleep health

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The clocks will change once again as we “fall back” from daylight saving time to standard time.

Sleep experts from University of Michigan Health said this shift is actually good for people and their sleep health. They said standard time aligns better with the body’s internal biological clock or circadian rhythm.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine called for daylight saving time to be abolished with a permanent switch to standard time. They cite the health consequences of springing forward, including a higher risk of heart attack and stroke, mood disorders, and hospital admissions for irregular heartbeats.

“So, standard time would actually be the more beneficial time to make permanent,” said Cathy Goldstein with University of Michigan Health. “And the reason is that the internal clock, that circadian rhythm, is longer than 24 hours. So, it’s easier for us to stay up late and sleep in. But what keeps us in line to the 24-hour day that wakes us up in the morning is getting morning sunlight, and that would be more available if we were on permanent Standard Time.”

Goldstein said unlike changes with springing forward, there is nothing people need to do to prepare for falling back to standard time.
