On Friday, a woman protesting in front of the Russian consulate in Rio de Janeiro was beaten in a videotaped event. The victim and the woman filming stated they were protesting the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine when the assailant, who was also a Russian citizen, walked out of the building and slapped one of them on the back. Another protester uploaded a video of the assault to social media, identifying the assailant as a consulate employee. The assailant was taken to the police station, while the victim was taken to the hospital by medical personnel observing the scene from a safe distance. According to the independent Russian news website Meduza, the woman has subsequently received threats from the consulate. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the freshly elected leftist president of Brazil, has attempted to mediate between Russia and Ukraine, suggesting a working group to negotiate peace negotiations and refusing to assign exclusive guilt to either side.
