Nourish Up’s involvement in Scouting for Food comes at a critical time as the demand for food assistance has risen sharply.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Nourish Up, formerly Loaves & Fishes, is a network of emergency food pantries plus the Meals On Wheels program. They provide nutritionally balanced groceries for neighbors in need and healthy prepared meals for those unable to prepare or secure meals for themselves.
For over three decades, the Mecklenburg County Council Boy Scouts of America has been involved in Scouting for Food. The Scouting for Food drive helps to replenish the shelves at 41 pantries across the Charlotte metro area. Scouts will be across the area on Sat., Feb. 1. If local residents received a special door tag, they are encouraged to leave a bag or box with nonperishable food items at their doorstep.
The Scouts will collect all that’s donated. In 2024, 180,000 pounds of food was collected. Almost 165,000 neighbors-in-need were helped. That’s an increase of 19% over the previous year. This year, the need is more than ever. Many who donated in the past have found themselves needing those generous contributions.
Nourish Up’s involvement in Scouting for Food comes at a critical time as the demand for food assistance has risen sharply in recent months, with more families struggling to make ends meet due to rising living costs and economic uncertainty.
The collaboration offers a much-needed solution to these challenges, helping to provide fresh, wholesome food to those who need it most.
Tina Postel, CEO of Nourish Up, said food security isn’t about just having enough food; it’s making sure the food is nourishing. The idea is that everything provided is wholesome and fresh to those who need it most.
The organization wants to help the community “thrive,” not just survive. That makes the partnership with Scouting for Food so meaningful. Local Scout leaders have praised the effort, noting the opportunity it gives young people to serve their community can make a lasting difference. It gives those Scouts a deep sense of pride in being part of a project that directly helps families in this area.
