Herd Women’s Basketball Hosts UPike Sunday in ‘Fans First’ Contest

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The new-look Marshall women’s basketball program hosts UPike in a preseason ‘Fans First’ game Sunday at 6:30 p.m. from the Cam Henderson Center.

PROMOTIONS: FANS FIRST – $10,000 Worth of Giveaways!

Marshall University Athletics will be giving away $10,000 worth of giveaways during Sunday’s Fans First games. Giveaways include: Promotional items at the door, season tickets, pizza, bookstore gift cards and more! Fans will be given a raffle ticket upon entry. Fans will then be able to put their raffle ticket in the box for whichever item they are hoping to win. During the timeouts of the two Fans First games, a winner will be drawn for the prizes.

PRE-GAME NOTES

  • Marshall enters the 2023-24 season under first-year head coach Kim Caldwell. Caldwell brings her fast-style pace and national championship resume to Huntington after a successful seven-year stint with Glenville State University.
  • The Herd returns 11 players from last year’s team, including Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team member, Roshala Scott. 
  • MU brings in six newcomers – four freshmen, two transfers.

ABOUT THE UPIKE BEARS

  • UPIKE has joined the AAC (Appalachian Athletic Conference) in 2023-24. The NAIA conference includes West Virginia schools, Bluefield University and West Virginia Institute of Technology. 
  • In 2022-23, UPIKE won 21 games, advancing to the NAIA Women’s Basketball Tournament. 
  • The Herd and Bears have only met once in a regular season contest, when Marshall won 100-59 on Jan. 4, 1990.
