After Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated movie Oppenheimer came out on Friday, the Hindu community was upset about a scene in which Florence Pugh and Cillian Murphy have a sexual encounter and talk about the Bhagavad Gita.
Before the movie came out, the community was happy that the holy text was in the movie, which is about the life of the man who invented the atomic bomb. But the explicit scene has led people in the community to change their minds.
Netizens were quick to criticize the “disrespectful” scene on social media. One person wrote, “Everyone Was Saying #Oppenheimer Is a Cinematic Masterpiece Must Watch. But after learning that there is a scene in which the Bhagavad Gita is read during sexual activity. Now that I’ve changed my mind, I’m going to go see a Kannada movie.”
People are also asking why the scene was allowed in the movie by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
A source told Bollywood Hungama, “Usually, such shots are the first to be axed in today’s times as it can hurt sentiments. Surprisingly, the CBFC didn’t ask for it to be axed.”
Robert Oppenheimer was known to like the Hindu holy texts. When he saw the damage caused by the atomic bomb, he thought about a quote from Gita that said, “Now I am become Death, destroyer of worlds.”
Murphy, who plays the main character, said that he had read the Bhagavad Gita in order to prepare for the movie. He said of the scripture, “I thought it was an absolutely beautiful text, very inspiring.”
