Historic carousel in Coolidge Park temporarily closing for routine inspection, touch-ups

The Ellis Carousel in Coolidge Park, built in 1894, will be “taking a quick break” for its annual inspection from Wednesday, Jan. 29 to Friday, Jan. 31, Chattanooga Parks and Outdoors shared online.

“[B]ut don’t worry—it’ll spin you right round this Saturday(yeah, went there),” their Facebook post said.

In the late 1980’s, Bud embarked on a mission to restore a 1894 Gustav A. Dentzel Company carousel from Atlanta’s Grant Park and bring it to Chattanooga.

This closure will enable inspectors to do a routine check-up, ensuring it is up to ASTM standards.

While closed, teams will spruce up the chariots with some new flooring, and the party room will receive a fresh coat of paint.

‘About 75 percent of the people that carved those animals had never carved before.’

Chattanooga Parks and Outdoors said they’re thankful to the community for their patience, and promise the carousel will be looking fancy and fresh for your next spin.

“P.S. The animals requested PTO but got denied. They’ll be fine,” their post comically concluded.
