Legislation to address the youth mental health crisis is making its way through the state legislature.
Governor Hochul, Attorney General Letitia James, and other top state officials are pushing for the passage of two acts that would restrict social media’s addictive features and the collection of minors’ personal data.
They say social media contributes to harmful behaviors in teens and young adults.
“These are ruled by addictive algorithms designed to draw the young people deeper and deeper into that darkness over and over,” said Governor Hochul. “These addictive feeds govern the content that social media feeds up to them but have also now taken over their well-being. It has gone too far.”
The state is also considering legislation that would expand school-based mental health clinics to serve thousands more students.
