Hockaday students Cecilia Chen and Margaret Hohenshelt, both in Form I, are the creative masterminds behind Sloane the Brand, a sustainable clothing business poised to challenge the fast fashion industry.

Chen and Hohenshelt, avid Vogue readers, channel their art history and fashion enthusiasm into making a significant impact on the fast fashion landscape. After discovering the issues plaguing their beloved industry, Chen used her art skills to create designs inspired by their favorite art movements, leading to the creation of Sloane the Brand.
Through the Institute of Social Impact, they sell their T-shirts at the Social Impact Bazaar, with plans to stock the Hockaday bookstore next year.
The duo announced their brand in March, followed by an April website launch.
“Our goal is to spread awareness of the sustainable fashion revolution by creating designs inspired by different art eras,” they explained.
Proceeds from Sloane the Brand support Fashion Revolution, an organization combating fast fashion and labor exploitation. Each T-shirt, is designed to outlast typical department store offerings, prioritizing timelessness over fleeting trends with classic designs that defy micro-trend cycles.
“We are inspired by Fashion Revolutions mission to create a sustainable and fair fashion industry that prioritizes growth over profit,” their statement said.

The first collection features three designs, each priced at $25. The Sloane, inspired by Impressionist artists, is a personal brand highlight. Love in Layers, a collage design, draws on Surrealist and vintage influences. Art Deco channels America in the 1920s and is inspired by late 1800s Japanese prints. These prints are available on T-shirts, long sleeves, and hoodies.
“We want to celebrate women in the arts and their impact on today’s culture,” they said. “In the future, we hope to expand to bags and other products, and eventually manufacture our own sustainable clothing line.”
Both Chen and Hohenshelt are Form I students and vogue fanatics and use their passion for art history, fashion and design to make an impact in the vast world of fast fashion. Reading about these issues in the fashion and how the passion they love becomes corrupt. Chen put her art skills to work to create designs inspired by her and Hohenshelt’s favorite art moments. Together, they created Sloane the Brand.
Chen and Hohenshelt use their passion for art history, fashion, and design to tackle industry giants like Shein and Temu. Their ultimate vision is to establish a fashion line that not only raises awareness about fast fashion but also helps to end it.
