Honoring mental health awareness and supporting veterans

ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) – In the month of May, we recognize both Mental Health Awareness Month and Memorial Day, two important observances that highlight the critical need for mental health support, especially for our veterans.

Congressman Tony Gonzales, a 20-year veteran, discusses the importance of addressing and finding veteran-specific resources for mental health issues.

Mental health challenges affect everyone, including those who have bravely served our country and who may encounter unique mental health struggles related to their service. Seeking help for mental health challenges is a sign of strength, not weakness. If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available, and reaching out is a courageous step.

Congressman Gonzales introduced a Military Construction and VA Appropriations bill, which was passed by the House Appropriations Committee. This bill allocates billions of dollars specifically for veteran mental health initiatives.

Veterans’ healthcare needs can vary greatly. Congressman Gonzales advocates for telehealth services, including televisits, telemedicine, and the use of advanced technology and education to make access to care easier for veterans.

The efforts to improve mental health resources in small communities are a reminder of the importance of open conversations and supportive actions. As we honor our veterans this Memorial Day, let us also commit to supporting their mental health and well-being.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available, and reaching out is a courageous step.
