CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The UNI men’s basketball team announced a pair of prep signings on Wednesday afternoon as part of National Signing Day, with signed national letters of intent from De Pere, Wisconsin power forward Will Hornseth and Norwalk, Iowa guard Redek Born.
“Will and Redek are super additions to our program,” said UNI head coach Ben Jacobson. “They have both won at a high level, are great teammates, and most importantly are terrific young men. Having the opportunity to watch them compete and spend time with them and their families has been a blast. We are lucky to have Will, Redek and their families join us officially today!”
WILL HORNSETH – De Pere, Wisc. (De Pere HS) – Forward
A 6′ 8″, 225 pound power forward from the Green Bay metro area, Hornseth is a three-year letterwinner for the De Pere Redbirds under head coach Brian Winchester, and on the AAU club circuit with the Wisconsin Blizzard and coach Jeff Nordgaard. With 984 career points scored, Hornseth has averaged 16.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.7 blocks per game last season, Hornseth played a key role in helping the Redbirds to a perfect 30-0 record and a WIAA Division I state championship in 2023, while also earning WBCA Division I First Team All-State and Fox River Classic First Team All-Conference honors.
“Will is an extremely well rounded and highly talented young man,” said Jacobson. “We have been impressed with him throughout the entire process. As a basketball player, Will brings a love for competition and a unique skill set for his size. He plays both ends, scores in all kinds of ways, and is a terrific playmaker and passer. As a young guy Will brings so many positives to our program. He excels as a student, has interests and passions away from the court, and is a high level teammate! Will makes everybody around him better and we can’t wait to get him here!”
Hornseth is the son of Brett and Betsy Hornseth, both former collegiate basketball players at Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Milwaukee respectively. He received additional recruiting interest from Toledo, St. Thomas, Illinois State and Green Bay.
REDEK BORN – Norwalk, Iowa (Norwalk HS)
A 6′ 3″, 180 pound guard and 915 career point scorer, Born signs with UNI after lettering his first three seasons at Norwalk High School playing under head coach Aaron Pelzer and an AAU club career with Martin Brothers Basketball under coach Hank Huddleson. A Class 4A First Team All-State, All-District and All-Little Hawkeye Conference performer, Born averaged 18.5 points 5.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists during his junior season, shooting 50.5% from the field and 40.4% from beyond the three-point arc in helping lead the Warriors to a state tournament appearance in 2022-23.
“Redek is a winner,” explained Coach Jacobson. “His approach to the game, competitive spirit, and who he is as a young guy are all going to have a meaningful impact on our program. We love his ability to play and defend multiple positions. His timing and feel at both ends allow him to have a huge impact on his teammates and on winning. Redek is such a quality young guy away from the court as well. We’ve known him for a long time and continue to be impressed with how he impacts everyone around him in a positive manner. We are very excited to make it official today and look forward to getting him here in June!”
Born is the son of Mike and Vicki Born, and younger brother of current UNI guard Bowen Born.
