Five Pioneers scored in double figures as Marietta College easily defeated Bethany College by the score of 118-76 Wednesday afternoon in Ban Johnson Arena. Marietta improves to 4-1 on the season, while Bethany falls to 2-5 on the season.
The 118 points scored is the second-most in the Jon VanderWal era at Marietta College. The Pioneers scored 120 in an NCAA Tournament first round win over Medaille in 2015. Marietta had its best shooting game in 13 years, connecting on 64.7% (44-of-68) of its field goal attempts. The best shooting performance since connecting on 66.7% (40-of-60) from the floor against Carnegie Mellon in 2010.
David Sanford was 6-for-7 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, for a game-high 18 points. Cooper Parrott hit three triples and finished with 16 points. Frank Waganfeald added 14 points, while Ethan Andersen and Jac Alexander scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Marietta scored the first nine points of the game and never looked back. A three-pointer from Alexander at the 12:54 mark pushed the Pioneer lead to double figures, 16-5. With 1:18 left in the first half, two free throws from De’Ovion Price gave Marietta its biggest lead of the half, 54-33. The Pioneers led 54-36 at halftime.
The Pioneers continued to pull away in the second half. A three-pointer from Sanford in the opening minutes of the period extended the margin to 23 points, 66-43. Alexander made it a 32-point game, 87-55, with 11:16 left on the clock.
Marietta hit the century mark when Eric Chapman sank a jumper in the paint with 6:19 remaining. Another bucket from Chapman at the 3:07 mark gave Marietta its biggest lead of the game, 48 points, 114-66.
Bethany had three players in double figures. Will Brooks led the way with 12 points. Tony Fox scored 11 points and Cole Matthews chipped in with 10 points.
Marietta is off until Saturday, Dec. 2, when the Pioneers open Ohio Athletic Conference play at Heidelberg. Tip-off in Tiffin is set for 4 p.m.
