GRANBY, CT (WFSB) – Pretty soon just about every Connecticut classroom will be officially closed for summer. Children learn so many valuable lessons in these places.
But, mental health experts warn that children can backslide during the summer in academic, social, and emotional areas.
Sherrelle Wong-Haffenden says she does not look forward to classes ending.
“I dread it. I’m sorry for the teachers. I know they’re on break, but I love when they’re in school,” she said.
However, there are steps parents can take to hopefully prevent the drop off from happening.
Doctor Heidi MacDonald understands Haffenden’s pain, as she is a mom and school psychologist in Granby.
She says summer can be difficult on children’s mental health, which more and more kids are struggling with.
“We are really far from where we were five years ago. As far as the number of kids needs and i think the pandemic had a lot to do with that,” she said.
The data backs that up. The Institute of Education Sciences reports that between 2020 and 2023, 70% of public schools have reported an increase in the number of students who are seeking mental health services.
MacDonald says don’t underestimate the value of your children’s social connections during the school year.
“Connection is protection. When kids are here and they have their friends or trusted teachers or a counsellor to help them thats very supportive,” she continued.
But she says you can stave off loneliness by booking summer activities. Excessive screen time can also increase social isolation, so set guidelines and discuss the reasons behind the rules.
“There’s lots of things that i think if you explain the rationale behind it the kids will understand why there should be a limit,” said MacDonald.
Another idea is if your child talks with a mental health professional during the school year, contact them to make a plan for summer. Many towns offer free or low-cost mental health services for kids.
Haffenden says her family has a game plan for the summer.
“You have to keep them occupied. Make sure their not getting into any troubles. Certain times you can’t be on the phone, no phone at the table, things like that,” she said.
MacDonald says that all you need to do is think about the right steps for your family and get ready to enjoy a magical summer.
