How will wildlife react to the total solar eclipse?

Tupper Lake, NY – Much of the discussion surrounding the upcoming solar eclipse has been centered around human activity, but wildlife in the region will be affected, too.

According to biologist, Nicole Baker, who works at the The Wild Center in Tupper Lake, wildlife will behave according to their typical nocturnal or diurnal habits.

“Some of our backyard mammals that are pretty well-known, like the White-Tailed Deer…they’re probably going to become a little more active. We’re also going to see our more crepuscular animals and nocturnal mammals–maybe even bats–coming out to play, because they’ll think it’s nighttime,” Baker said.

Creatures that tend to make more noise at night, such as Spring Peepers and certain insects, will also kick up their usual symphony as totality approaches. The darkening sky, coupled with a quick temperature drop of 5 to 15 degrees, will trick them into thinking that nighttime has begun.

No matter what you’re doing on April 8th, take a moment to stop and listen to the wild world around you.
