Hundreds get moving during Rapid City’s Turkey Trot

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Hundreds turned out for what has become a Thanksgiving morning tradition in Rapid City — the Black Hills Runners Club’s Turkey Trot. The club says roughly 1,300 people signed up this year.

The event featured two separate five-kilometer (3.1 mile) courses — one for walkers and one for runners. Both courses began at Old Storybook Island. The walkers set off toward Canyon Lake Park at 8:00 a.m., while the runners began their Turkey Trot at 9:00 a.m., headed for Sioux Park and Founders Park.

Club President Jessica Linquist says participants enjoy getting out and being active before settling in for the rest of the holiday celebration. “I think everybody’s so used to this tradition [and] has such a great time getting out before they go and start the festivities,” she said. : This is the 44th annual Black Hills Runners Club Turkey Trot. [In] years to come, it’ll keep happening, but I think it really means a lot to the community to have this event.”

As always, all of the registered participants were eligible for a drawing for one of the 400 pies the club gave away. This year’s flavors included pumpkin, pecan, peach, and apple. The pies were provided by Trinbrielle’s Bakery in Rapid City.
