For the women like myself who have thin, flat hair, finding the right styling tool can often present a bit of a challenge.

With the rise of the hair are trend having a bit of a boom, I have been on my own journey to hair health. From heatless curlers to ditching my bleached locks for a darker balayage, I have been looking for ways to get my over-processed locks back into shape.

Of course, I still like to style my hair, but it is still prone to damage and frizzy ends that get frazzled at the first sign of heat. So, how do I tackle this particular conundrum? Enter the Cloud Nine Original Hair Iron.

With its variable temperature control and cushioned plates, the Cloud Nine straightener has reviews for leaving hair “glossy” and “healthy”. In fact, some ghd fans have even said they are “better” than the major brand. As a millennial who grew up on her pink ghds, that is high praise.

Available to buy from the Cloud Nine website for £189 and as a gift set on Boots for £199, the highly coveted hair tool isn’t cheap, but it does come with a luxury reputation. Even Frankie Bridge is a fan, with the popular Loose Women presenter recently being named as an ambassador for the brand.

If it’s good enough for Frankie, then I was willing to give them a go.

How does the Cloud Nine Original Hair Iron work?

Hailed as an everyday styling tool, the Cloud Nine Original Hair Iron certainly look the part with a thin, sleek design. I’d imagine this makes them ideal for popping in your handbag and suitcase for when you are on the go.

It uses variable temperature control between 100°C to 200°C that is easy to use for you to select the right heat for you hair. As a fairly fine haired girl, I opted for a medium temperature when styling, occasionally going a little higher when curling.

Meanwhile, the most handy part for me were the cushioned mineral-infused ceramic plates that are said to lock in moisture and provide even pressure on your hair. There’s also a hibernation mode after 30 minutes, so if you’re someone who forgets to turn your styler off, you’ll be happy to hear your house won’t burn down.

What are my initial thoughts?

I guess I should admit that the Cloud Nine was my first hair straightener in well over a decade, after I got rid off my old ghds as a teenager due to over-styling. That being said, I have always had a curler at home as I prefer a bit of volume and style for my thin locks.

So, coming back into the hair straightening game, I was a little nervous, especially as I was trying to keep my hair in good condition. As it turns out, I didn’t need to be nervous at all, as I think the Cloud Nine Original Iron is worth all the praise it has received so far.

First things first, the device itself is incredibly lightweight and easy to rotate, thanks to its unique 360° swivel cord. This meant that your arm never got tired while styling, as it so often can, and it easily reaches your entire hair, even those hard to get bits right at the back.

They also heat up incredibly quickly, which is ideal if you’re in a rush. If you ever grew up in the early 00s, or even before then, with a pair of straighteners that took at least 10 minutes before they got warm, then you’ll know this is a game-changer.

While I do have quite poker-straight hair anyways, I did find that the mineral-infused ceramic plates helped to give them a bit more of a glossy appearance without that frizz at the end. My hair didn’t feel overly dry, and looked effortlessly straight.

However, the area I was most impressed with was its ability to properly curl my hair, which is something I have always struggled to do. Not with the Cloud Nine, as its rotating cord made it easy to create a curling movement easily and effortlessly.

Long gone are the days of me getting my hair clamped and dragged through a burning hot plate for a limp curl at best. In its place was a straightener that glides through the hair without getting stuck, leading to a full on bouncy curl that didn’t look as though it had been overly damaged by the heat.

While I was thoroughly impressed with how glossy and healthy my hair felt, I do still suffer from split ends very easily, so I am still need a bit of product. Recently I have been impressed with the £26 OUAI Hair Oil, but it is the Cloud Nine Magical Remedy that has helped to reduce the appearance of damage and frizz, making it the perfect post-styling treatment.

Verdict

Overall, I have to admit that I don’t have a bad word to say about the Cloud Nine Original Hair Iron. As someone who hasn’t used a straightener for a long time, it was the perfect tool to get back into the game.

I do know that some reviews have mentioned that they “take a while to straighten” and that a few users found that they had “use them a couple of times” before they achieved the pin straight locks. I personally didn’t experienced this issue, but I do have fine, and near-straight hair already.

In my experience, it is the ultimate multi-tasking hair tool that has helped this thine haired girl achieve both the straight and curled style with minimal effort, while leaving her hair silky soft and glossy.
