Nutritional deficiency can have life-threatening consequence in elderly

A lot needs to be taken care of when one ages. From diet to workout to every aspect of lifestyle needs to be revisited in elderly population.
A new study has taken cognisance of the effect of the deficiency of a common nutrient in older individuals. Researchers from the University of Toronto in Canada have studied the case of a 65-year-old woman with mobility issues and social isolation and have found that vitamin C treatment improved her health condition to a large extent. The findings of the study have been published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).
“This case presents a complex example of food insecurity manifesting as an uncommon diagnosis,” said Dr. Sarah Engelhart, a general internist at Mount Sinai Hospital and the University of Toronto.

The researchers studied the common symptoms of the woman which included leg pain and weakness, skin lesions, and discoloration. She also had several chronic health conditions that restricted her ability to carry out chores on her own. She lived on canned soup and fish, with no fresh produce.
The experts have urged to assess children and older adults for vitamin C deficiency as the symptoms are not specific.
The team noted that people who follow restrictive eating patterns (for example, those with autism spectrum disorder or those on a tea and toast diet), who smoke cigarettes, who have a substance use disorder, or who have malabsorption syndrome, can also be at risk of scurvy.
This calls for paying extra attention to seniors in terms of care and support. Seniors need customized nutritional plans for their optimal health.

A customized nutritional plan for seniors is essential to address the unique challenges they face as they age. As metabolism slows and nutrient absorption declines, older adults require specific nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, and fiber to maintain bone health, prevent chronic diseases, and support digestion. Customized plans can also address individual medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease, helping to manage symptoms and improve overall health.
Seniors may also experience changes in appetite or taste, making it difficult to meet nutritional needs. A personalized plan considers their preferences and lifestyle, ensuring that meals are both enjoyable and nutrient-dense. This tailored approach promotes healthy aging, enhances energy levels, and improves quality of life. In this context, an organisation can be of immense help. ASLI or Association of Senior Living India established in 2011 aims to improve the life and living of elderly in the country.
