In an effort to reduce illegal street takeovers, IMPD and IndyHoodRats have teamed up to help give people a space to hold car events.
INDIANAPOLIS — For the first time ever, IMPD is partnering with a local car organization, IndyHoodRats, to promote safe and legal streetcar events.
“We thought the best route to go would be to reach out to them and see if there was in any hopes to do something in conjunction and try to aim it toward community directive in order to pull it off ultimately,” said Jacob Ross, one of the owners of IndyHoodRats.
IndyHoodRats is an automotive event organization that’s promoting safe legal car events, featuring all types of vehicles — like sportscars, muscle cars and even luxury rides.
“It’s kind of hard to find car meets that you can take your kids to that isn’t way too street race-y or way too takeover-y,” Ross said.
Ross is now working with IMPD to host a legal car show event at the former Indianapolis Airport parking garage.
“The city still owns this property, and it’d be the perfect place,” said IMPD Ofc. Ryan Deakin.

IMPD responded to multiple street takeover events last year. Deakin says some of those resulted in damage to property and officers’ cars.
“We saw an up-tick in spinning which is where people would go out to intersections and do donuts and it got very chaotic and people got injured and it was just a negative scene,” Deakin said.
“They actually went to Ben Davis recently and the kids were saying that they thought the police loved shutting down events,” Ross said. “Ryan made sure to say that’s not the case. If it’s done properly, they want to be there to support and that’s exactly what we have going on here.”
A proper way to get hundreds of cars in one place, for a good and safe time.
“Some events that go on around town are just illegal and they’re running from the police all night,” Ross said. “That’s not something you want to take your child to, so we try to deliver that clean style event for the whole family to come to.”
That block party event is happening Saturday, April 26 at the former Indianapolis Airport parking garage, located at 2440 South High School Road. You can find more information here.
