Upper Darby police reported this on Tuesday afternoon: “A stolen vehicle has crashed at State Rd and Lansdowne Ave, causing minor to moderate traffic delays. The crash was not related to the schools or the school dismissals, but traffic in and out of the area will be affected until we can get it cleared up. We will update when we can.”
Police radio traffic revealed:
About 3:10 p.m., an officer got behind a stolen 2013 Hyundai Sonata out of Darby near the Upper Darby police station on Route 3, also known as West Chester Pike, in the area of College Avenue.
West Chester Pike was clogged with traffic due to road repairs, with another officer nearby handling the traffic. Within a minute or so, officers converged on the scene.
Soon, a police vehicle was reportedly struck, then there was a pursuit or at least police vehicles following the stolen car close enough to see its turns. That went on for a few minutes before the crash at State Road and Lansdowne Avenue in front of a CVS.
Two people got out of the stolen vehicle and ran. One was quickly arrested, but the second lead officers on a significantly longer foot chase through the area.
He, too, was apprehended.
No police officers were injured. A firearm was found in the stolen car.
This information is preliminary and the Daily Times will update with the next statements that become available from the police.
