The fourth edition of India EV 2024, focused on discovering innovative solutions, achieving sustainable EV integration in smart cities concluded on 30th June 2024. The two-day expo, envisioned a future that blends environmental consciousness with technological progress, was held at the Chennai Trade Centre.
Organised by Entrepreneur India, with Citroën as the title partner and powered by Jio-BP, the expo attracted participation from various stakeholders in the vehicle electrification ecosystem.
The event, supported by a range of sponsors, including LUBI and EV Lubricant, attracted visitors from various segments. It also received significant support from esteemed industry bodies and ministries such as the Ministry of Heavy Industries, the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Guidance Tamil Nadu, the Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce, ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India), and ICAT (International Centre for Automotive Technology). Mobility Outlook was among the media partners for the show.
Inaugurated by S S Sivasankar, Minister for Transport, Government of Tamil Nadu, the expo featured participation from V Vishnu, MD & CEO of Guidance Tamil Nadu, and several prominent industry leaders, including Harish Mehta, CEO of JIO BP, Shishir Mishra, Brand Director of Citroën India, Dr Sauro Mezzetti, Chairman of the Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce and Dr Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Professor at IIT Madras. These leaders shared visionary insights on the future of electric mobility during the conference.
The event attracted a diverse range of industry leaders—from automotive giants and advanced charging solution providers to pioneering battery innovators, cutting-edge test facilities, software developers, MaaS innovators, drivetrain specialists, financial experts, and legislators—all committed to driving progress and collaboration.
With over 2,000 participants, the two-day conference featured more than 120 distinguished exhibitors. Over 55 notable speakers engaged in ten-plus panel discussions, B2B roundtables, product launches, and networking sessions.
Day one of the conference focused on integration and global expansion, while day two covered topics such as battery manufacturing, AI integration, and the prominence of Tamil Nadu’s EV production. Key themes discussed at the expo included funding, charging standardization, EV infrastructure, semiconductor availability, and the future of electric mobility in India.
As part of the expo, Frost & Sullivan released a report titled “An Overview of the Indian Electric Vehicle Market: Trends and Future Outlook” in conjunction with India EV 2024, highlighting the nation’s EV goals, trends, and future outlook.
Report Highlights
Sales Projections: Over 123,000 units of Battery Electric Vehicles (passenger cars) are expected to be sold in India by the end of 2024, marking an estimated year-on-year growth of 47.9% compared to approximately 83,000 units sold in 2023.
Market Leadership: Tata Motors dominates the market with over 64% share; the Tata Nexon EV was the highest-selling EV in 2023.
Regional Sales: South India leads EV sales, accounting for nearly half of the country’s total sales.
Tamil Nadu’s Role: The growing presence of OEMs, component suppliers, and battery/cell manufacturing companies positions Tamil Nadu as a key player in EV sales growth and an R&D hub in India.
Current Production: Hyundai Motor and Stellantis have begun producing EV passenger vehicles in Tamil Nadu. Other major automotive companies like Renault-Nissan and BMW are also expected to establish EV production in the state.
Localization Goals: OEMs aim to localise the production of 60-70% of EV components, including critical parts (excluding the battery), by 2030.
Shishir Mishra delivered a keynote address, offering his insights on creating a supportive EV ecosystem in India. ‘By prioritising innovation, investing in infrastructure, and implementing supportive policies, India can establish itself as a global leader in the electric vehicle industry. We must focus on research and development, foster collaboration with industry stakeholders, and remain committed to sustainability,’ he said.
