New Delhi: India has taken a significant step forward in its automobile industry by domestically producing ‘reference’ petrol and diesel. The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is at the forefront of this initiative, producing these specialized fuels to ensure a consistent, lower-cost supply, thereby reducing dependency on imports.
What are reference fuels?
‘Reference Fuels’ are of superior quality and are crucial for gasoline and diesel vehicle manufacturers. These are used extensively for engine development, performance assessment, and ensuring operability across global climatic conditions. It’s essential for test/certification agencies to utilize these fuels for evaluating performance.
Given that emission regulations and fuel specifications can vary widely worldwide, OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) require a diverse range of Reference Fuels when developing new vehicle models.
Historically, only a select few companies, primarily from Europe and the USA, provided these fuels to India.
The impetus for indigenous production
India’s shift towards the indigenous production of these specialized fuels is monumental. For many years, the country depended heavily on imports. The new move promises a reliable and more affordable supply for both vehicle manufacturers and testing agencies. Moreover, key testing organizations such as ICAT (International Centre for Automotive Technology) and ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) find these fuels indispensable for their operations.
Celebrating this milestone, IndianOil has commenced the production of reference gasoline and diesel fuels, marking it as a first in the nation.
Aligning with the vision of a self-reliant India
Reflecting the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Make in India, Make for World’, the Indian Oil Corporation Limited has now equipped its facilities for the production of various Gasoline Reference Fuels at Paradip Refinery and Diesel Reference Fuel at Panipat Refinery.
These domestically-produced reference fuels underwent rigorous testing at NABL accredited laboratories, including those of IndianOil’s R&D Centre and Intertek in both the UK and India. They are now available in 200-litre barrels.
The latest projections from SIAM indicate a yearly domestic demand of approximately 120 KL for gasoline reference fuel and about 15 KL for diesel reference fuel. IndianOil is well-positioned to meet this demand and has the capacity to increase production for exports if required.
Current landscape and stakeholders
Several prominent automobile and component manufacturers in India, including MSIL, Renault Nissan, TVS Motors, Hero Motocorp, and Toyota, have been importing various types of reference fuels for activities like homologation, calibration, and development. Furthermore, automotive certification agencies like ARAI and ICAT have been using these fuels for emission certification processes.
Renowned testing agencies, including HORIBA, AVL, and FEV, operate NABL accredited technical centers in India, relying on reference fuels for various developmental and consultancy activities.
This move towards self-reliance not only boosts India’s industrial capabilities but also promises significant economic benefits by reducing imports and ensuring cost-effective and reliable supply channels.
