Indian Celebrities At The 2024 Cannes Film Festival

The 77th Cannes Film Festival, which began on May 14 and will go on till the end of this week, has been taken over social media with celebrities bringing their fashion A-game to the red carpet. This coveted film festival is known to have the best of cinema from across the world compete across categories, including the prestigious Palme D’Or award.

Over the years, Indian cinema has fortified its place at the festival. Back in 1946, Chetan Anand’s Neecha Nagar became the first Indian film to win the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film award, followed by Bimal Roy’s Do Bigha Zamin, which won the Prix Award in 1954. And two years later, Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali won the Best Human Document Award at the festival.

In the past, Indian talent ranging from Nandita Das, Vidya Balan,Shekhar Kapur, Sharmila Tagore, Priyanka Chopra, Arundhati Roy and Deepika Padukone among others, have served as jury members as well in the past. In fact, Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan premiered at the Cannes in 2002, while Nawazuddin Siddiqui received a standing ovation for his performance in Manto in 2018. Just two years back, the documentary film All that Breathes also won an award.
