Interactive exhibition at Turtle Bay educates on artificial intelligence programs

An exhibition at Redding’s Turtle Bay Exploration Park is teaching guests about the latest in technology.

The STEAM exhibit, called “AI: Your Mind & the Machine,” demonstrates how artificial intelligence programs operate through hands-on interactives, games, videos and more.

It opened on Sept. 23 and is being presented in partnership with The Relayer Group, an entertainment provider that’s touring the exhibit in cities around the country. Other backers of the project are Dr. Eric and Tiffany Blasingame and the Salter families.

The Relayer Group detailed that systems like ChatGPT, deep learning, pattern recognition and neural networks are incorporated in the exhibition.

Turtle Bay Curator of Collections and Exhibits Julia Cronin told us why “AI: Your Mind & the Machine” is a valuable learning experience for guests of all ages.

“I think this is an exhibition with something for everyone because you can be a history buff, you can be someone who’s really into AI technology, you can be totally new to it, or you could just be someone who likes to play games to learn,” Cronin said before adding, “It’s a very gamified exhibition where you’re trying new things out. And you can try ChatGPT in a safe environment with our interface instead of having to do it on your own.”

Cronin added that, through “AI: Your Mind & the Machine,” participants gain a greater understanding of the differences between humans and artificial intelligence programs.

“Human beings have to train AI, and AI isn’t advanced enough to train itself at this point. We’re getting closer, but it is definitely something where the humans are still in charge, and the machines are learning the same way children learn,” Cronin said. “However, your average five-year-old can do more things at the same time than a single AI can do. Most AIs are programmed to do one task, whereas we as humans are programmed to do multiple tasks at the same time. And I think that’s something that’s going to be very interesting for people to learn.”

Additionally, Turtle Bay has stated that “AI: Your Mind & the Machine” is designed to show visitors how our brains and AI will work together in the future.

It’s free for all Turtle Bay members and included with paid park admission. The exhibit is open through Jan. 7, 2024.
