Fans of the Father of the Bride films can create the unique look of these movies with a few simple design touches.
Various works by American filmmaker Nancy Meyers, the writer of the Father of the Bride movies and romantic comedies such as Something’s Gotta Give, It’s Complicated and The Holiday, have inspired the serene and idyllic “coastal grandmother” design trend on social media.
The “cozy” and “timeless” feel of the Father of the Bride films is characterized by some key design elements, according to interior designer Valerie (@brextoncoleinteriors on TikTok).
She shared her tips for achieving the “Nancy Meyers movie look” in a viral TikTok video, which has had over 110,000 views since it was first posted on March 21.
A message overlaid on the clip says “Ask a designer: How to recreate a Nancy Meyers home” as the video highlights several home features seen on the set of Father of the Bride.
Around 3 in 5 homeowners remodeled or decorated their home in 2022, while nearly half made repair, according to a survey of 46,118 U.S. homeowners aged 18 and older conducted by Houzz, a home design website.
The survey found that the median spend for home renovations in 2022 was reported to be $22,000, while the median for higher-budget updates reached $140,000 or more.
Interior spaces were reported to be the most popular areas to renovate in the same year, with homeowners taking on an average of nearly three interior projects at a time.
How To Create the Nancy Meyers Movie Look at Home
A caption shared with the latest post says: “How to decorate your home like Father of the Bride‘s Nancy Meyers.”
The voice in the latest viral clip says “Growing up, I’ve loved Nancy Meyers movies. I love Father of the Bride so much because I love looking at the design aesthetic of the house.”
Beautiful Pots and ‘Pretty Food’
The video footage shows what appears to be a kitchen scene from the film as a note across the screen reads: “Open shelving, copper pans, and layers of pretty food.”
The voice in the clip says: “An emphasis is always placed on the kitchen and beautifully styled pots and pans.”
‘Creamy White Walls’
The voice in the clip notes “Probably the biggest trait in Nancy Meyers movies is the wall color.”
A message overlaid on the screen reads “Creamy white walls all the time” as the video shows the white walls of a living room and dining room in a home in the film.
The voice says “think of creamy whites like White Dove and Manchester Tan by Benjamin Moore. This creates a very calm aesthetic.”
Linen-Covered Seats and Sofas
“Another design detail that I’ve noticed are beautiful line white covered seats and sofas,” the voice says. The clip shows a living room area with sofas surrounding a coffee table.
A note across the screen says: “Linen-covered sofas and natural light.”
The voice in the clip adds: “This is so cozy and it gives a timeless feel.”
Simple Layering
The voice in the clip says “At first glance, all of her [Meyers’] movies are so homey. One of the key reasons for this is her simple layering.” The video showcases another living room setup with couches and sofas on carpeted flooring near a fireplace.
A message across the screen reads: “Layering such as natural wood tables with flowers on top, pillows, cozy blankets and window treatments.”
The footage shows a couch setting with muted tones of beige and pink and lots of natural light coming through large windows.
“Think of natural distressed wood, marble, copper, lush linens, plants and ceramics and beautiful styled pillows,” the voice says as the video ends.
