‘It was a fashion awakening’: Jeanne Beker and other fans on how Beatlemania disrupted Toronto’s style scene

The Beatles rocketed into Jeanne Beker’s life in suburban Toronto, when she was about 12 years old and a friend played 1963’s “She Loves You” at a sleepover. “It turned me on to music,” said the fashion reporting icon. “It was all so revolutionary.”

Not least their style, which Beker dove into researching in teen magazines: “They all dressed alike as a group in those collarless suits. You saw suits like that in Motown, but you didn’t see white musicians dressed like that.” She was most struck, however, by the haircuts. “Nobody had those mops of hair!” Indeed.
