‘It’s just sick’: Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown doesn’t want to talk about basketball after Maine shooting
“And until we decide to do something about it, the powers that be, this is going to keep happening,” Brown said.
Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown devoted his post-game press conference Wednesday to expressing outrage over the deadly Maine rampage, calling it “a sad day” for a country that has repeatedly failed to act to address mass shootings. “It’s just sick. I don’t know what else to say,” he said. The Kings had just defeated the Utah Jazz 130-114 in their season opener, but Brown didn’t want to talk basketball as details were unfolding over the shooting and manhunt in Maine. “First thing, I’d like to say. I don’t know everything that’s going on,” Brown said. “I’m not that smart, but I know we as a country got to do something.”At least 18 people have been killed and 13 wounded in the shootings at a bowling alley and a restaurant in Lewiston, Maine, authorities have said. The suspected gunman remained at large as of Thursday morning. Brown called the violence “absolutely disgusting,” a “sad day” for the country and the world, and yet all too common. “And it’s sad, and it’s sad that we sit here and watch this happen time after time after time after time and nobody does anything about it,” Brown said. “And until we decide to do something about it, the powers that be, this is going to keep happening,” Brown said. “And our kids aren’t going to be able to enjoy what the United States is about because we don’t know how to fix a problem that’s right in front of us. Sad. I feel for the families.” After a reporter asked him if he wanted to talk about the game, Brown declined. “I don’t even want to talk basketball. I’m sorry,” he said. “We played a game. It was fun. Obviously, we won. If we can’t do anything to fix this, it’s over. It’s over for our country, for this to happen time after time. I’ll talk tomorrow.”He then got up and left the room.
