Ivy Tech Lake County has acquired new equipment for two of its academic programs.
A 500-gallon, two-chambered therapy pool was purchased by the physical therapist assistant program, which is based in Crown Point. The pool provides adjustable water height and temperatures, and an underwater seat and treadmill. It also includes water jets to provide resistance to movement.

Dawn Bancsi, the head of the PTA program, said the new pool will allow students to learn about the features of aquatic therapy to threat individuals with weigh-bearing issues and arthritic conditions and higher-level exercise challenges of athletes.
“This will add a whole new dimension to the skills they are learning in our PTA program,” Bancsi said in a press release.
Two hybrid vehicles were purchased by the automotive technology department, which is based in East Chicago. One of the cars will be used to teach hybrid safety and familiarize students with the operating systems of vehicle.

The second automobile will be a “cutaway” trainer that has no roof for easier access to the battery compartment and better view of the inside of the vehicle. The cutaway hybrid will be used to further train students in maintaining and repairing the battery and control units of the car.
The 2010 “cutaway” trainer Prius has the roof removed to allow easier access to the car’s battery compartment and better view if inside the vehicle.
According to program chair Javier Rivera, the trainer will allow instructors to insert faults into the vehicle’s systems and student will have to diagnose and repair those issues.
“These vehicles ensure students learn the most up-to-date automotive skills,” Rivera said in the press release.
The cost of the therapy pool was $81,850, while both hybrid cars totaled nearly $62,000. The equipment was purchased with Perkins Grant funding, which assist high schools and public two-year colleges improve career and technical education programs.
