Jackknifed truck causes I-295 travel delays

A jackknifed tractor trailer has caused major traffic delays on I-295 southbound in Delaware.

The big rig crashed into a guardrail near the Route 141 off ramp around 8:15 Thursday morning, May 23, 2024.

A New Castle County EMS unit rolled up on the crash and began treating the driver, a 35-year old woman, who was briefly trapped in the wreckage.

She was taken to Christiana Hospital in serious, but stable, condition.

The crash caused a fuel leak which resulted in the declaration of a hazardous materials incident which brought crews from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) to the scene to oversee the cleanup.

The incident also tore out a considerable section of guardrail which will need replacing.

Lane restrictions backed up traffic on southbound I-295 back to the Route 9 interchange, and were expected to continue into the afternoon hours.
