James Gunn Says He Thought of Killing Gamora in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’

James Gunn, who used to work for Marvel and is now the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, almost killed Zoe Saldana’s character Gamora in Vol. 2.

Yondu, played by Michael Rooker, was originally intended to live, but Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and writer Louis D’Esposito persuaded him otherwise. Instead, Michael Rooker, who played Yondu, was killed off. Gamora died in Avengers: Infinity War but was brought back from another world in Avengers: Endgame.

Gunn told Comicbook.com, I knew from the beginning Zoe only wanted to play the character for so many years, and she’s been very honest saying that she’s done [after this]. And so I was going to have her die. I thought she was the one that was going to sacrifice herself… I was kind of talked out of it by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito, and then it just didn’t work that well. It didn’t feel right. It felt much more right to go where we go in that movie. That seemed what was correct for the story.”

Since Gunn has free reign over the film’s content, it’s anyone’s guess whether or not Gamora will make it through Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

James Gunn, the new co-head of DC Studios and the director of the last three “Guardians” films, is leaving Marvel to focus on creating a new DC Universe across film, television, and video games as his full-time job.

Also, after Guardians Vol. 3 came out, Zoe Saldaa and Dave Bautista, who have both been in “Guardians” movies, both said they would be leaving Marvel soon after James Gunn.
