James L. Butler, 89, of New Enterprise, died on Nov. 22, 2023. He was born in Roaring Spring, the son of Vera (Stuard) and Henry Butler.
Jim graduated from Roaring Spring High School in 1952. He served two years in the Army before graduating in 1959 with a degree in biology from Juniata College in Huntingdon.
While at Juniata, he met his wife of 64 years, Doris K. (Brumbaugh) Butler.
Jim had a successful 28-year career with Gwin Dobson & Foreman Engineers as an environmental scientist specializing in water quality management.
Jim is survived by his wife, Doris; and three children: Susan Butler, Norman Butler and Diann Stedman; five grandchildren: Mindy Ochoa, Zacary Smith, Emily Stedman, Jonathan Stedman and Allison Butler; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Amy Lee Smith; as well as his parents; and siblings: Elaine Dodd, Colleen Mock and Larry Butler.
Jim enjoyed music, hunting, fishing, biking, skiing and tennis.
He was a dedicated family man whose quick wit, infectious laugh, thoughtfulness and passion for nature will be greatly missed.
No service is planned at this time. Arrangements are by Todd T. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., Roaring Spring.
Those wishing to commemorate Jim’s life can donate to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy; St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; or the local fire/EMT department.
