MARQUETTE, MI – James Patrick Shirtz, age 72, of Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday, Nov. 26, 2023, shortly after admittance to UP Health System-Marquette.

Jim was born March 17, 1951, in Marquette, a son of Charles and Elizabeth (Lompre) Shirtz. He was raised in Marquette and graduated from Marquette Senior High School with the Class of 1969. Jim continued his education at Northern Michigan University, receiving his bachelors degree in 1981. While attending Northern, he met his future wife, Cheryl Petz, and began working for Coca-Cola. On June 16, 1973, Jim and Cheryl were united in marriage, making their home in Marquette where they raised their sons. Jim later began a long employment with Aramark, receiving several sales awards throughout the years, and advancing to the employee improvement team for the company. His career allowed him to travel to various locations and he retired in 2006. In retirement, Jim worked at several part time positions. In his leisure, Jim enjoyed fishing, bird hunting, being out in the woods, walking the beach, and competing in several mountain bike races. He was especially proud of his outdoor Christmas displays and of the year that he won an award from the Board of Light and Power for his decorating efforts. Jim enjoyed working at the Cedar Tree Institute and on its various projects with Jon Magnuson, and together they were involved in the annual making of maple sugar. Jim was a kind, caring, funny, and loving man who was especially devoted to his family. He especially enjoyed any time spent with the grandkids and following their activities.

Jim is survived by his wife, Cheryl; sons, Michael (Pamela) Shirtz of Sandusky, OH, and Kris (Jesse) Shirtz of Marquette; his grandchildren, Lily and Mara Shirtz of Marquette; his brother, Greg (Lisa) Shirtz of Marquette; several nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Messiah Lutheran Church on Monday, December 4, beginning at 10:00 am until the time of service at 12:00 noon. Rev. Dr. Andrew Plocher, pastor, will officiate. A reception will follow in Magnuson Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cancer Care of Marquette County or the Cedar Tree Institute.
