Japan’s Galapagos syndrome found in cell phones

The Galapagos and Japan: both island chains in the Pacific, both highly idiosyncratic, and both famous for instances of evolution — the Galapagos with finches and tortoises, Japan with cellphones.

The comparison is no joke. Around 20 years ago, a term entered the Japanese lexicon to describe how the country develops in its own, isolated way.
