Jane Buffett, the widow of music icon Jimmy Buffett, wants to make major changes to her late husband’s estate.
The “Margaritville” singer died in 2023, leaving $275 million in assets. Still, Jane claims in a June 3 court filing that her co-trustee has told her that she will receive less than $2 million annually, a rate of return of less than 1% of the total asset amount.
According to People, Jeffrey Smith, the lawyer representing the trustees and co-trustee Richard Monzenter, have acted “openly hostile” towards Jane. The suit also details that Monzenter has not acted in good faith towards the late singer’s wife.
“Mr. Mozenter has failed to perform even the most basic tasks required of him in his role as co-trustee, including providing Mrs. Buffett with information concerning Trust assets and finances, which has left Mrs. Buffett in the dark with regard to the state of her own finances,” the filing reads. “Along the way, Mr. Mozenter has belittled, disrespected, and condescended to Mrs. Buffett in response to her reasonable requests for information she undoubtedly was entitled to receive.”
Monzenter’s attorneys have also filed a suit against Jane, saying that she has “interfered in ways that have cost the trust money and [is] seeking to remove her as co-trustee,” according to Bloomberg reports.
The late singer’s assets include a 20% stake in Margaritaville, which has more than 30 restaurants, bars, and hotels. According to the suit, other assets include $34.5 million in property, $13.5 million in airplanes, $11.4 million in art, $2 million in musical equipment, and $5 million in vehicles.
