HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison rolled in doubles play and won at four of the top five singles spots to claim a 5-2 non-conference women’s tennis victory against Howard on Saturday afternoon at East Campus Tennis Courts.
The Dukes evened their record to 2-2 on the year, while the Bison fell to 0-3.
Three JMU players went 2-0 on the day in Cate Broerman, Reka Matko and Alexandra Prudente while Daria Munteanu also picked up a singles victory.
JMU went 2-0 in doubles and led in the third, while all six singles matches finished in straight sets, including a big comeback on court two.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- JMU seized early control with a dominant victory on court two, as Broerman and Hayley Glen turned in a 6-1 win over Ava Chamber and Selah Stibbins.
- The Dukes clinched the doubles point on court three, as Matko and Prudente pulled away from Sifa Butcher and Dana Hall for a 6-3 victory.
- On court one, Munteanu and Ines Oliveira led Imani Jean and Nadia Pegram, 5-3, when the match was abandoned.
Singles Play
- Broerman continued her stellar play in singles, as she rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 triumph against Butcher on court one.
- Howard got on the board with a victory on court three, as Chambers outlasted Oliveira, 6-3, 6-4, in a tightly-contested bout.
- Munteanu extended JMU’s lead to 3-1 after overcoming a huge early deficit. Trailing Stibbins 5-2 in the opening set, she would win five of the next six games to win the tiebreak and drop just two more games in the second en route to a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win.
- Matko secured the team win on court four, pulling away from Pegram for a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
- Prudente notched her first home win of the season on court five, registering a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hall.
- In the final match, Jean held off Sara Sadadinovic on court six by scores of 6-4, 6-4.

JMU is back in action next weekend for a pair of matches at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center in Lynchburg, Va. The Dukes face Missouri in a neutral-site match on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 10 a.m., followed by a road showdown at Liberty on Sunday, Feb. 4 at noon.
